CBD Lube Benefits & Products To Try

Cannabidiol, more popularly known as CBD, is a cannabinoid that has officially worked its plant-based magic into our lattes, makeup, bath bombs, and basically every other product that promotes everyday wellness… including intimate lubricants. But why would anyone want to use CBD lube? How is it better than that old bottle chillin’ in your nightstand? Well, for a lot of reasons, and in a lot of ways. And in case you’re wondering if it’s actually even safe to use CBD lube, we spoke with an ob-gyn and a medical advisor to get all the deets.

What are the potential benefits of using CBD lube?

Kecia Gaither, MD, MPH, FACOG, double board-certified in OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine and Director of Perinatal Services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, vouches that CBD lube offers a number of awesome benefits. “It not only targets somatic (or bodily) issues but also has an effect on the neurological (mental) component as well – in effect, keeping one in ‘balance’ so to speak,” she says. She adds that when CBD is used as an enhancer for sexual intercourse, it can help to moisturize and regenerate the delicate skin of the genital areas, decrease pain for people who suffer from dyspareunia (painful intercourse), decrease inflammation, increase the production of natural lubrication, alleviate anxiety, and enhance orgasm intensity. In other words, it definitely has the potential to become a new favorite addition to your masturbation and/or partnered sex seshes.

Oh, and although it may feel like you’re high ~down there~ you won’t feel any psychoactive effects ~up there~ in your head, unless you ingest a THC-infused lube. But THC-free CBD lube won’t get you stoned. Sorry!

Is CBD lube body-safe?

Since CBD lube is a fairly new innovation, there isn’t much research about it yet, so these perks are mostly based on anecdotal claims. However, medical advisor for cannabisMD Dr. Junella Chin believes that the historical record of safe use for cannabis is unparalleled. “There is strong criticism that there is a lack of data, but I had a clinical practice in California (and now in New York) for over a decade and have been helping patients integrate cannabinoid medicine safely, under careful physician guidance.”

According to Chin, it’s worth noting that California has two decades (!) worth of anecdotal evidence that can attest to cannabis’s medical benefits. “This is data we have been sitting on since 1985,” she says. Furthermore, Gaither adds that the cannabis plant has been utilized as a medicinal agent for millennia. “Given the legalization of cannabis for medicinal purposes and recreational use, I anticipate an evolution of novel research in the pharmacokinetics of the substance and its impact on multiple issues affecting bodily function.”

See? Expert(s) confirmed: Yes, CBD lube can be safe, therapeutic, and pleasurable.

Precautions to take before buying CBD lube

Before you go purchasing the first bottle of CBD lube you find from a random website on the internet, Gaither reminds folks to beware that the best products are free of additives and perfumes (which may cause irritation down there) and to know that oil-based lubricants may cause latex condoms to weaken or break. No matter which intimate lubricant you plan to buy, remember to check the list of ingredients for any substances that you or your partner(s) may be allergic to prior to use. It’s also encouraged and suggested to thoroughly research the company that you plan to buy from by reading past reviews and checking if they readily provide third-party or independent lab test results of their products. (No results? GTFO.) If you still have qualms or hesitations, NBD. Consider consulting with your own doctor to see if CBD lube is a viable option for you and your partner.

K. Now that we got all that out of the way, down to test out some CBD lube for yourself? Join the club. Here are five trusty, customer-approved CBD lubes to try for more pleasurable, pain-free play.

GoLove CBD Lube | $68

This vegan, hypoallergenic CBD lube is formulated by husband-and-wife duo sexologist Dr. Sadie Allison and CBD scientist John Renko B.S.E., and it’s the strongest on the market with a whopping 200mg CBD per bottle. A detailed ingredients list, certifications, and downloadable lab test results are all available for review on their website so you know exactly what you’re getting and why. Plus, this lube is water-based so you can use it with latex condoms. Win-win-win! Now go love GoLove CBD.

*Unbound Dazy CBD Lube | $55

Unbound makes a bunch of body-safe sex toys and related pleasure products, including a water-based CBD lubricant called Dazy. Dazy is infused with 30mg of CBD and no THC and takes only 1-2 minutes to feel its effects. When using only a couple of drops of this lubricant, reviewers reported experiencing less pain during penetrative sex, a “nice heat,” a tingling sensation, improved blood flow to the genitals, and magical, extended orgasms when paired with silicone toys and latex condoms. Hellllll yeah.

Foria Basics Suppositories With CBD | $72

As opposed to the other CBD lubes in this list, these vaginal and rectal suppositories are meant to be used 30 minutes before sexual activity. They contain 100mg of broad-spectrum CBD in each suppository and are specifically created with the intent to relieve pain, discomfort, and/or inflammation during sex and menstrual cycles. You can either use them as a form of relief from dyspareunia or period cramps or as a lubricant during the act of penetration. A big bonus of Foria’s plant-based suppositories is that they’re totally organic and free from pesticides and other dangerous products that you’ll definitely want to avoid inserting into your body, *especially* into the anal and vaginal canals.

*Bella Aqua D’Amore CBD Lube | $12

Bella Aqua D’Amore is a premium CBD lubricant made without silicones, parabens, or glycerins, which are three of the most common toxic ingredients found in intimate lubricants (?). This lube features hypoallergenic CBD isolate and is water-based, so that means it’s safe to use with latex condoms and for people with sensitive skin. The amount of CBD infused in each bottle ranges from 40mg to 100mg depending on the size you purchase. No matter which one you choose, customers said they experienced “life-changing” amplified sensations, muscle relaxation, a “slightly sweet flavor,” and a more thrilling climactic journey during solo and partnered play.

Knob Polish By Jack | $12

Cleverly named, Knob Polish By Jack is a CBD lube specifically made for people with penises. Whether you use a drop or a handful of this thick water-based lubricant, this product is safe for use with latex and silicone condoms and doesn’t include any spermicide. It’s also infused with hypoallergenic CBD isolate, which, again, means that this lubricant should be a safe option for people with sensitive skin.
